Description
What has happened to reality? For Navy Seal Commander Jackson Wade the question becomes a mantra, as he is understandably changed by events surrounding the cataclysm that most in its wake call The Storm. The one man largely responsible is Doctor Michael Ian, head of IanTech, and contracted by the Special Projects Unit of NATO Allied Forces to create a machine which should shorten considerably the length of time during interstellar travel. Michael however discovers that his machine can create a portal allowing for travel back in time. SPU is intrigued initially, but preliminary experiments prove the endeavor a dangerous one if employed. Michael is ordered to discontinue the effort and to dismantle the machine. Against their wishes however, Michael defiantly activates the device and steps through the portal generated. As predicted, temporal waves are produced on the portal's opening, unleashing a cosmic storm that is killing life by the millions on Earth. The waves prove even more far reaching, as dozens are also killed on the terraforming facilities of Mars, and more still who occupy research stations throughout the solar system, from the inner planets, to platforms orbiting the outer system's gas giants. SPU desperately sets Jackson on a mission to find Michael Ian and eliminate him where it is believed by IanTech engineers on the scene that their CEO's termination is the only way to stop the death and destruction caused by the portal's opening which proves impossible to close otherwise without possibly creating conditions that could potentially destroy the universe. Jackson steps through the portal and successfully carries out the mission, but it comes at a personal cost that thrusts him 30 years into the future having not aged, granting him superhuman ability, and seeming immortality. Now Jackson must adjust to life after the events of The Storm; a world now with a populace of people exhibiting near psychic abilities called Tells, who are compelled to give voice to the thoughts they hear, and the precognitive waves of insight that occasionally cross their minds; a world now on the cusp of perfecting artificial intelligence and the proliferation of android workers; a world now without his beloved, long dead, wife who died giving birth to their now estranged adult son, yet provides him an unexpected new love. Decades of service in his new commission with the US Naval Space Corp and as a continuing agent of SPU provide a kind of stability for a career soldier like Jackson, but after nearly a century in the wake of The Storm, questions from the event still haunt him while he tries to live out a normal life, questions about the true nature of the experiment that birthed the cosmic storm, and an exploration of what Jackson really encountered during the operation to end it. Decades of probing, and experimentation by SPU, find no concrete explanation for Jackson's new abilities and his long life edges him closer toward a mental and spiritual crisis through the re-examination of his efforts back on that fateful mission. New visions of the mad engineer responsible for "The Storm" bring with them sinister forces working against Jackson, but a profound encounter has him questioning everything he thought he ever knew, and a growing conviction, driving Jackson toward some unexplained purpose; a compelling dynamic to existence discovered in the wake of a tempestuously changed world... a verse unexplored and unsung.
